The Anatomy of Trauma
This course consists of 10 experiential anatomy modules that take us through the human body from the feet up. We will explore the anatomical structures and functions as well as dive into how trauma affects each and how we can utilise this knowledge for our own health and when working with clients.
Understanding Trauma Through Anatomy and Embodied Intelligence
Ten carefully sequenced modules exploring how trauma shapes the body’s systems, and how somatic awareness restores coherence, resilience, and functional health.
-
The feet are our primary interface with the ground. In this module, we explore the anatomy of the feet and legs and how stability, balance, and support are shaped from the ground up. You’ll learn how trauma impacts structures such as the plantar fascia and how restoring connection through the lower body supports safety, orientation, and resilience.
-
The pelvis is the body’s central foundation. This module explores pelvic anatomy and the psoas muscle — a key player in survival responses and stress patterns. You’ll learn how trauma shapes pelvic tension, posture, and movement, and how releasing this core area supports grounding, fluidity, and emotional regulation.
-
This module examines the abdominal wall, lower back, and adrenal glands — regions deeply involved in the stress response. You’ll learn how trauma is held through muscular tension and hormonal activation, and how understanding these systems helps restore containment, stability, and adaptive stress release.
-
The diaphragm is central to breathing, posture, and emotional regulation. In this module, we explore how stress and trauma restrict breath and movement, and how restoring diaphragmatic function supports nervous system balance, coherence, and deeper connection between body systems.
-
This module explores the anatomy of the shoulders and their relationship to the neck, throat, and voice. These areas are essential for reaching, holding, expressing, and setting boundaries. You’ll learn how trauma limits expression and how releasing tension here supports voice, agency, and authentic movement.
-
The face and jaw often hold unspoken stress. This module examines how trauma shapes facial tension, jaw restriction, eye movement, and tongue function. You’ll learn how these structures reflect safety, vigilance, and communication — and how softening them supports clarity, presence, and ease.
-
This module explores the vagus nerve and its role in regulating heart rate, digestion, breathing, and emotional states. You’ll learn how Polyvagal Theory helps us understand safety, connection, and stress responses — and how supporting vagal tone enhances resilience and relational capacity.
-
The spine is the central axis of movement and communication. In this module, we explore spinal anatomy, cranial nerve pathways, and the thoracolumbar fascia. You’ll learn how trauma disrupts flow through these systems and how integration supports posture, coordination, and nervous system coherence.
-
This module explores how trauma affects the brain — including the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem — and how these regions interact with the body. You’ll gain insight into how stress shapes perception, behaviour, and regulation, and how embodied approaches support integration beyond cognition.
-
Fascia is the connective network that links every system in the body. In this final module, we explore fascia as a sensory, communicative, and adaptive system. You’ll learn how trauma impacts fascial continuity and how restoring fluidity supports resilience, movement, and whole-body integration.

A Sneak Peek
Module 1: Feet and Legs
In this foundational module, we dive deep into a part of the body that often goes overlooked—the feet. Our feet are the essential foundation of our entire body, supporting our weight, maintaining balance, and allowing us to move through the world with ease and grace. Yet, many of us rarely give them the attention and care they deserve.
Module 2: Pelvis and Psoas
In this module, we journey upward from the feet and legs to focus on a profoundly important area of the body often called the seat of our emotions—the pelvis and the psoas muscle.
The pelvis serves as the central hub connecting the upper and lower body, supporting our core strength, stability, and movement.
You’ll learn techniques to release stored tension, cultivate awareness, and restore balance to this powerful area of the body.
Module 3: Abdomen, Lower Back, Adrenals, Stress Release
The abdomen houses vital organs, including the adrenals, which regulate our stress response and overall energy levels.
The lower back supports our spine and absorbs much of the tension we carry, especially during times of stress.
This module is designed to help you reconnect with your core strength and learn how to release stress stored in the body, fostering deeper relaxation and balance.
